Civil War in Virginia

Monument Avenue

In the Civil War , most every major battle was fought
in
The South. And no state was the location for more battles than The State of  Virginia.

In 1861, THE STATE of  VIRGINIA
became one  of The Conferate States of America.

Richmond became The Capitol
of The Confederate States.
The First Battle of Manassas
was the first major land battle of The Civil War.
The Battle of Hampton Roads was famous
for being the first fight between two ironclads,
the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia.

The South suffered when Stonewall Jackson died , in 1863,
however the victorious Confederate Army seemed invincible.
Confederate General Robert E. Lee decided to take the war
to the enemy.  It was on the battlefield of Gettysburg, PA were The Army of Northern Virginia met its first defeat.
The Battle of Lynchburg took place between June 17 and 18, 1864.
Advancing through the Shenandoah Valley, Federal troops seemed to be making progress
until Confederate forces led by General Jubal Early confronted them in town.
At that time, Early's reinforcements arrived from Charlottesville. This extra assistance,
led by General John Breckinridge caused The Federals to retreat.

The Confederate armies of Virginia  finally surrendered to United States forces on April 9, 1865 in Appomattox effectively ending The Civil War.  It has been said The Salem, VA Flying Artillery  fired the last shot in the battle.
